Early Childhood Development at the dRPC

studentsThe dRPC founders and staff are committed to the Centre’s work in early childhood development. Our collective experience of coordinating development interventions shows that improvement in education opportunities and standards impacts on all areas of development: employment generation, public health, child survival, gender equity, peace and security.

The dRPC focuses on early childhood development, an area which has little attention but which provides the foundation for learning, development and survival of children as well as societies. Early childhood development in the dRPC is a creative and sustainable approach to facilitating learning among children, teachers and communities to achieve academic standards in an environmentally relevant manner by broadening learning spaces beyond the class room to incorporate cultural, social, economic and environmental realities of the communities in which learning takes place. The ECD project aims to build learning communities with children at the core and with children’s needs for academic achievement, nutrition, a disease free environment, creativity and integrity being met.

The Centre’s work in early childhood development covers:

  1. training of ECD level teachers

  2. donations of creative learning materials to pre-primary classes in government and private schools

  3. sub-grants to community based organizations to run ECD Centers

  4. school water and sanitation awareness creation training

  5. advocacy skills building for education stakeholders

  6. ECD study tours for government officials to learn about best practices from neighboring countries such as Ghana

  7. ECD outreach to rural communities

The dRPC has been implementing ECD projects since 2003 with funding from  international Foundations as well as bilateral agencies:
