The National Council for Women Societies in collaboration with development Research Project Centre has engaged in a press briefing to commemorate the 16 days of Activism to end Gender-Based Violence on the theme: Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls. The most common acts of violence against women in Nigeria include sexual harassment, physical violence, harmful traditional practices, emotional and psychological violence, socio-economic violence and violence against non-combatant women in conflict situations.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is also a time to remember victims and survivors of GBV and further re-evaluate an intervention to improve the gender-based violence policy environment at national and state levels.
It is on this note the council engaged with the media to reiterates the need for the Government to cushion the effects of the current fiscal policies on Nigerian women particularly those in rural communities, most of whom are already groaning under the weight of extreme poverty.
The event was graced with seventeen four (74) participants from various states. The various state presidents, secretaries and affiliate members of the council and other invited guest. In the attendance there was no male participant.
The event was opened by Dr. Asebe Villita, Director General of Mariam Babaginda Centre appreciated the National Council for such an initiative to advocate for discrimination against all forms of violence against women and girls. She noted the need for increase participation of women in decision making in all sectors of the Nigeria Economy. She also said if women are empowered it could help reduce poverty rate, stable employment, decreases food insecurity, and the stabilized nutrition, and overall wellness of her family increases.
The National President Hajiya Lami Adamu Lau acknowledged the presence of the DG Mariam Babangida Centre for honoring the occasion. She warmly thanked the National Officers, state present and affiliates of the Council for their commitment and continuous efforts in propagating the Council. The President also commended the Drpc for the support to Nigerian women.
Hajiya Lami said Gender-based violence is a grave violation of human rights that affects women and girls across all socio-economic backgrounds, and that it is a persistent challenge that demands coordinated action and sustained investment in preventive measures. “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls” serves as a rallying cry to governments, businesses, communities and all stakeholders to prioritize the allocation of resources, and intentional gender-friendly budgeting towards funding transformational interventions that address gender-based violence.
Investments play a very critical role in preventing violence said hajiya Lami. Support towards education, awareness campaigns, community engagement, and the development of support systems, we can create environments that foster equality, respect, and safety for all. Together we can empower individuals and communities to challenge harmful norms and build a future where everyone can live free from violence and fear. Let us unite in our dedication to building a world where every person is treated with dignity and respect, free from the threat of gender-based violence.
