World UHC Day: Stakeholders meet to chart a path for 200 million to access health easily through coordination, adequate funding, and policy formulation. The event was attended by dRPC, WHO, NPHCDA, NHIA, and organised by UHC Forum The meeting, which was organised under the UHC Forum, Nigeria, discussed the new vision that is designed to refocus, remodel, and provide adequate funding for Nigeria’s health sector. The meeting also reflected on how the health system architecture in Nigeria would be reorganised.

Other issues the forum looked at were how to set up an inter-ministerial committee on health financing, raise the bar of accountability and accelerate stakeholders’ interventions to improve and ensure the attainment of UHC in Nigeria
In his speech at the meeting, The Coordinating Minister of Health, Dr Muhammed Ali Pate disclosed the ambitious health plan as Nigeria’s only option to revive the nation’s health sector. He called on all stakeholders to join him in rebooting the nation’s health sector.
Panellists at the event, led by the Gombe state Governor, Alh Inuwa Yahaya, Dr Judith-Ann Walker, executive Director, dRPC, WHO organisation Country Director, UNICEF Country Representative and the NHPCDA’s DG, all agreed that Nigeria, like other countries, lagged on achieving UHC for their people.
They, therefore, commended the federal government for the new health sector renewal investment initiative designed to place Nigeria at the forefront of health indices.
In her contribution, Dr Judith-Ann Walker called for the inclusion, accountability, and mobilisation of all critical stakeholders to join the UHC action agenda so that the nation can achieve its aims and goals for providing health for all.
The panellist also disclosed that only 6 million Nigerians of the 200 million are covered by health insurance as of 2023. And only 22 of the 36 states have functional health insurance systems. And only 8000 PHCs of the over 30,000 PHCs in Nigeria receive adequate funding through the BCHFP.
