Grantee Name: NECA’s Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW)
Location: Lagos
Project Summary: Empowering Female Petty Traders in Mile 12, Lagos This project aims to revive and expand a previously successful intervention carried out under the Women’s Voice and Leadership – Nigeria (WVL-Nigeria) project, funded by ActionAid Nigeria. That initiative equipped over 400 petty traders with the knowledge needed to access grants and loans. Building on its success and lessons learned, this follow-up focuses on 50 vulnerable female petty traders in Mile 12 International Market, Lagos.
Over a targeted 3-month period, the project will provide business development and financial literacy training, facilitate access to capital and markets, and promote gender equality within local economic systems. A key activity will be a one-day workshop covering record-keeping, business growth strategies, loan accessibility, gender-based violence awareness, and women’s health. Stakeholders such as the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and Kosofe Local Government officials will engage participants, offering vital information on available support services and government programs.
Following the workshop, 25 traders selected through a transparent process received direct business support grants of ₦100,000 each, based on assessed needs and business plans. The project also seeks to establish sustainable peer support structures and connect participants with microfinance institutions, ensuring long-term growth and resilience.
