About the Fellowship

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation Leadership Fellowship is a distinguished program designed to develop Africa’s future leaders. In partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the fellowship provides young professionals the opportunity to engage in high-level strategic assignments at the senior levels of the Bank, contributing to Africa’s governance, development, and institutional capacity.

Key Responsibilities

Fellows will:

  • Design, develop, and help implement innovative approaches on strategic issues aligned with the Bank’s mission.
  • Conduct research, policy analysis, and prepare briefs and memos for senior leadership.
  • Participate in high-level discussions, contribute to President’s meetings, and support the Bank’s regular work programs.

Benefits & Financial Support

  • Fellows receive a monthly stipend, financed by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and administered by the Bank.
  • All official travel costs related to the assignment (excluding initial assumption of duty and repatriation) are borne by the Bank, including insurance.

Eligibility & Criteria

Candidates should:

  • Be nationals of an African country.
  • Not be current or former staff members of AfDB, or have close family relations with staff.
  • Be under age 40 (or up to 45 for women with children).
  • Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field (economics, public policy, development, social sciences) and have 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, strong analytical ability, excellent communication, and experience in strategy, policy, and project execution.

Duration & Terms

The fellowship is for up to 12 months at AfDB headquarters or relevant Bank locations. The Fellows contracts with the Bank and is subject to its staff regulations. There is no guarantee of future employment at the Bank, and the position is non-renewable.
