The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture is seeking an experienced Head of Communication and Knowledge Management to lead its corporate and research communication function across Africa and globally. This senior leadership role is responsible for shaping institutional visibility, translating research into policy-relevant knowledge, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and supporting resource mobilization.
The position integrates corporate communications, digital engagement, advocacy, knowledge translation, media relations, and crisis communication. The successful candidate will design and implement a three-year integrated communication strategy aligned with institutional priorities, donor requirements, and global development frameworks, while leading a multi-country communications team.
Key Requirements
- Master’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Policy, International Development, or related field
- 10–15+ years of experience in integrated communications, including at least 5 years in leadership roles
- Proven experience translating scientific research for policy and practitioner audiences
- Strong expertise in digital platforms, media relations, and stakeholder engagement
Contract: Three years, renewable subject to performance and funding

Cowpea Breeding Lead
Location: Kano, Nigeria

IITA invites applications for the position of Cowpea Breeding Lead, a senior scientific role responsible for leading cowpea breeding programmes primarily across West Africa. The role focuses on developing high-yielding, climate-resilient, and nutritionally enhanced cowpea varieties aligned with farmer and market needs.
The successful candidate will coordinate breeding pipelines, set regional breeding priorities, support variety release and seed systems, and contribute to regional and global research initiatives, including CGIAR breeding programmes and donor-funded projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead demand-driven cowpea breeding strategies and product development
- Coordinate multi-location testing, data analysis, and advancement processes
- Strengthen partnerships with national breeding programmes and research institutions
- Mentor breeding teams and contribute to research publications and resource mobilization
Key Requirements
- PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, or a related field
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in plant breeding programmes
- Strong leadership, partnership-building, and research management skills
- Experience working in multicultural and multi-institutional environments
