As Nigeria ranks very low on the number of women in African Parliaments with 179th global rating translated to 3.95% representation of women in unicameral or lower chambers of parliament, the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in collaboration with Policy and Legal Advocacy Center (PLAC) with support from the European Union (EU) convened the International Legislative Dialogue on Women and Constitution Amendment in Nigeria on the 29th of October 2024.The convening discussed the Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) to Provide for Seat Reservation for Women in the National and State Houses of Assembly; and for Related Matters (HB1349) sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the Nigeria House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, (CON). and co- sponsored by 12 other members of the House. The bill seeks to remedy the low representation of women in Legislative Houses by providing for the creation of additional separate seats to be contested and filled by only women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. In attendance were international law makers including the Speaker Parliament of Tanzania, Rt. Hon. (Dr. Tulia Ackson) and physically present was the Member of Parliament of Republic of South Africa, MP Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla. National and subnational lawmakers, civil society organizations, women groups, political party representation , the academia, the media and development partners were also in participation including the Speaker, House of Representatives and his wife, the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Senate President represented by Senator Kaka Lawan, the First Lady of Nigeria represented by the H.E, Prof Olufolake Abdulrazak, the first lady of Kwara state and the Chairperson, Nigeria Governors Spouses Forum, the First lady of Yobe state, first lady of Plateau, the Chair of House Committee on Women Affairs, The representatives of the Conference of Speakers, the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), representative of NIPSS, the EU Delegation to Nigeria and the ECOWAS, the representative of the British High Commission, the UNDP Resident Representative for Nigeria, the UN Women Electoral Management and Governance Expert, WARDC, Mac Aurthur Foundation, PRAWA, PLAC and the dRPC. The high-level stakeholders present signed a Statement of commitment to support constitutional amendment on women’s participation in governance in Nigeria led by the Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazak the Chair of the Nigeria Governors Spouses Forum and presented to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
