Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Accredited

The development Research and Project Centre (dRPC) is now Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Accredited!

The Consultative status granted to dRPC enables it to engage in several ways with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council, and, under specific conditions, some meetings of the General Assembly and other intergovernmental bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat.

The privileges and benefits of consultative status include:

  1. Designation of Representative: The dRPC may designate authorized representatives to sit as observers at public meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council, and, under certain conditions, the General Assembly and other United Nations intergovernmental bodies.
  2. Attendance at Meetings and Access to the United Nations: Consultative status entitles the dRPC to designate official representatives to the United Nations Headquarters in New York and the United Nations Offices in Geneva and Vienna. These representatives can register for and participate in sessions, events, conferences, and activities of the United Nations and related organizations.
  3. Consultations with NGOs: Consultative status affords the dRPC the opportunity to be consulted by the Council or one of its bodies to provide expert information or advice on subjects where it has special competence.
  4. Written Statements at ECOSOC: The dRPC can submit written statements relevant to the work of the Council on subjects in which it has special competence. The Secretary-General of the United Nations may circulate these statements to the members of the Council.
  5. Oral Presentations at ECOSOC: The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations can recommend that organizations with general and special consultative status, including the dRPC, make oral presentations to the Council on specific items. Such organizations are entitled to make one statement to the Council, subject to its approval.
  6. Commission Recommendations: A commission of ECOSOC may recommend that the dRPC or any other NGO with special competence in a particular field undertake studies or investigations or prepare papers for the commission. The Secretary-General may also request organizations in consultative status to carry out studies or prepare papers.
  7. Use of United Nations Facilities: The Secretary-General is authorized to offer United Nations facilities to the dRPC or any other NGO in consultative status, including:
  • Accommodation for conferences or smaller meetings related to the work of ECOSOC, as available and under the conditions set at each UN Office.
  • Appropriate seating arrangements and facilities for obtaining documents during public meetings of the General Assembly that deal with matters in the economic, social, and related fields.
  • Arrangement of informal discussions on matters of special interest to groups or organizations.
  • Access to United Nations press documentation services.
  • Prompt and efficient distribution of documents related to ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies as deemed appropriate by the Secretary-General.
  • Use of United Nations libraries.

Additionally, the dRPC is obligated to submit quadrennial reports.
