Applications are now open for the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Program (OFP) 2026, an initiative of the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, implemented through EducationUSA Nigeria. The programme is designed to support outstanding Nigerian students with strong academic records and leadership potential who wish to pursue higher education in the United States but lack the financial resources to cover the upfront costs of the application process.
The Opportunity Fund Programme seeks to expand access to U.S. higher education by assisting academically talented, low-income students to successfully navigate the admissions process and compete for full financial aid at accredited U.S. colleges and universities.
Programme Benefits
Selected participants will receive comprehensive support throughout the U.S. university application process, including:
- Individual and group advising from EducationUSA advisers;
- Guidance on identifying suitable U.S. institutions;
- Support in preparing competitive applications;
- Coverage of eligible application-related expenses, subject to programme guidelines and available funding;
- Assistance with standardized testing, application fees, and other pre-admission costs where applicable.
It is important to note that the programme does not provide tuition funding. Instead, it helps students access U.S. institutions where they may compete for full scholarships or financial aid.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be Nigerian citizens residing in Nigeria;
- Demonstrate exceptional academic achievement;
- Show strong leadership potential and community engagement;
- Demonstrate financial need and an inability to cover the upfront costs associated with applying to U.S. universities;
- Intend to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies at accredited institutions in the United States;
- Be committed to fully participating in programme activities and advising sessions.
Selection Process
Candidates will undergo a competitive selection process conducted by EducationUSA advisers and the U.S. Mission in Nigeria. Selection will be based on:
- Academic excellence;
- Leadership experience;
- Financial need;
- Motivation to study in the United States;
- Overall potential to succeed in a rigorous academic environment.
