The Women In Media (WIM), a sub grantee of the Partnership for Advocacy in child and family Health At Scale (PAS), and members of the family planning Technical Working Committee in Kano State expressed concern over possible drying up of funds for FP services in the state.
This concern was raised during the first quarter meeting of the FPTWG in Kano in March. Supported by the WIM-PAS, the TWG meeting is a quarterly meeting of all stakeholders in the FP space in the state where issues around FP funding and policy are discussed and solutions proffered and sent to the State Commissioner of Health for implementation.
During the meeting members raised several observations and concerns prompting a unanimous decision to immediately write to the State Commissioner of Health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa for quick intervention to prevent reversal of the achievements recorded in the state on FP.
At the end of the meeting, the following decisions were reached:
- A memo for the release of FP budgeted funds should be prepared and submitted on or before 14th April 2021. The Memo should highlight the fact that the sources for FP funding might be drying up in 2021.
- Facilities having 100% reporting rate should be commended by DMCSA;
- The Sub Committee on integration of FP and DRF Commodities should meet to discuss the strength and weaknesses of piloting the integration using DRF system or Vaccine supply system.
- The SPHCMB Logistic unit and SOLINA should be incorporated into the Sub-committee and the Roadmap for the Integration of Distribution of FP Commodities and Consumables with DRF.
On the Data validation on FP Scoring sheet, the RH/FP TWG members adopted the scoring sheet as pilot study only and should not be used to generalize the FP Landscape in Kano State. The meeting also agreed on the selection of indicators to be used for assessing FP activities in the state.
Others issues discussed during the meeting were;
- RH/FP TWG members deliberated on the indicators for the scoring sheet
- RH/FP TWG members deliberated on administration of scoring sheet on a single person which cannot be used to determine the FP landscape in Kano State. They advised that there is need to interview all FP key stakeholders in the State before making conclusions.
- The RH/FP TWG members requested that the methodology should be re-visited to make it more scientific.
