Impact Seed Fund 2026 – Africa | Grant Opportunity

The Pulitzer Center is inviting applications for its Impact Seed Fund (ISF) 2026 to support educators and researchers in Africa who want to expand perspectives on pressing socio-ecological challenges. The program aims to enrich knowledge on issues related to rainforests, oceans, climate, and labor crises, linking journalism with education to drive awareness, understanding, and action within academic and school communities.

Who Can Apply:

  • University lecturers based in the following African countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Angola, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Central African Republic, Guinea, Mozambique.

Funding Focus & Amounts:

  • Transparency & Governance: USD 2,500 – 4,000
  • Rainforests, Oceans, Climate & Labor: USD 2,500 – 3,500
    Applicants must provide a detailed budget specifying how funds will be used. Projects must be linked to Pulitzer Center-supported stories reported by grantees or fellows in one of the thematic areas and demonstrate a clear impact on academic communities such as students, lecturers, researchers, or civil society groups.

Project Themes Include:

  • Transparency & Governance
  • Rainforest Issues: deforestation, protection, peatlands, illegal logging
  • Ocean Topics: fisheries, deep-sea mining, ocean science, shipping
  • Climate & Labor Concerns: energy transition, climate impacts, labor rights, job landscape changes

Project Activities:

  • Initiate or strengthen collaborations among teachers, researchers, students, and journalists.
  • Promote innovative teaching and learning formats including comics, animated videos, photography, short videos, documentaries, podcasts, and data visualizations.
  • Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, including gender equality and disability considerations.

Grant Requirements:

  • Projects must be implemented in consultation with relevant Pulitzer Center grantees or fellows.
  • Recipients must submit financial and narrative reports describing outcomes and expenditures at the end of the grant period.
