About the Fellowship

The Japan Program Postdoctoral Fellowship invites junior scholars to research and write on issues related to contemporary Japan. Topics can include political science, economics, sociology, law, policy studies, international relations, and related fields. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Stanford University, participate actively in program seminars, and contribute to APARC’s publication work.

What Is Offered

  • A 10-month fellowship appointment starting October 1, 2026, with a salary typical of Stanford’s postdoc policy (pro-rated to the 10-month period).
  • Up to US$80,000 per year (pro-rated) plus up to US$3,000 in research expenses.
  • Full participation in the Japan Program at Stanford: seminars, publishing opportunities, and engagement with academic peers.

Who Should Apply

  • Applicants must hold a PhD conferred no more than three years before the fellowship start date; the degree should be officially certified by June 30, 2026.
  • Those interested in multi-disciplinary research on Japan and who are willing and able to reside at Stanford for the full fellowship academic year.
  • Scholars capable of submitting all required materials including a CV, research statement, and letters of recommendation and prepared to engage in scholarly output and presentations.
