The dRPC-PACFaH@Scale sub-grantees, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) and the National Association of Pediatrics Nurses of Nigeria (NANPAN) are conducting a study research on the uptake of the new treatment guidelines on the Childhood Killer Diseases amongst Children with chronic diseases in Kano and Niger states respectively.
The retrospective study will look backward and examine exposures to suspected risk or protection factors in relation to an outcome that is established at the start of the study. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods will be employed to obtain data. Findings obtained from these methods will be triangulated.
According to Comrade Bunmi Lawal, the Project Director, NANPAN-PAS Project, the qualitative research will provide the much-needed in-depth explanations on treatment uptake in Niger and Kano states while a quantitative method will provide the numerical data needed to achieve the required objectives. In effect, all retrospective records from 2016 to 2018 of in six facilities, two from each of the three senatorial zones with a high prevalence of CKD cases in Niger and Kano states respectively would be used during the research. Respondents will include guardians/parents/caregivers, SS clinic staff and policymakers from 12 secondary health facilities (two per senatorial zones in of Kano and Niger States). The facilities with a high prevalence of CKD cases will be targeted for the study.
Comrade Bunmi added that a purposive non-probability sampling technique will be used for all the researches in the two states. This technique involves the nonrandom selection of health facilities. The research will be conducted through the administering of facility assessments; guardian/parent/caregiver interviews and record reviews at selected SS clinics of the target secondary health facilities in Kano State.
She added that the data collected will be entered in EPI data 3.1 computer programs to minimize data entry errors. The data entered will then be exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 for analysis. Then the data will be recorded, coded, categorized and sorted to facilitate its analysis. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 will be used to analyze the data. The findings of the research in the two states will go through peer review mechanism before presentation to stakeholders in the two participating states.
