Coordinators of GPE/NIPEP from Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Sokoto states, 7 emirate councils in Northern Nigeria, Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development were part of a Regional Meeting on the Role of Traditional Institutions and Leaders in Public Health and Girls’ Education organised by the dRPC on the 8th & 9th May 2017 in Abuja. The workshop afforded the GPE/NIPEP coordinators from the 5 GPE/NIPEP states to share their experiences working on girls’ education in the five states and explored opportunities for synergy between the GPE/NIPEP states and the Northern Nigeria’s emirate councils.
They informed the traditional leaders about the strategies they use in reaching out to traditional and religious institutions on the project. The officials urged the eight emirate councils (Bauchi Emirate Council, Bida Emirate Council, Birinin Gwari Emirate Council, Dass Emirate Council, Dutse Emirate Council, Kano Emirate Council Committee on Health, Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development & Zamfara-Anka Emirate Council) representatives to lend their unwavering support to the GPE-NIPEP project. On their part, the Emirate Councils’ representative urged the officials of the Ministries of Education to keep them abreast of the activities in the project. The Kano GPE-NIPEP team leader was, particularly, urged to seek an audience with His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II, CON Sarkin Kano in order to brief him about the activities the project activities..
