MoLs as the key gender norms custodians in Northern Nigeria
Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs) are mainly men who are recognised and accepted in Muslim-majority societies as having the legitimate authority and suitable to provide moral and, in some cases, legal guidance on ALL aspects of life, including on GBV as a result of their expertise in Islamic knowledge on the precepts, tenets, and jurisprudential basis of Islam.
MOLs are viewed as more legitimate and authoritative, with a broad knowledge of ALL aspects of life.
Their influence extends to both traditional and modern domains of society, guiding the faithful and even policymakers on all aspects of life, including gender equality.
MOLs provide guidance when consulted through public pronouncements, making and interpreting laws in the Islamic judicial system as moral police Hisbah.
Many MOLs give advice, make rulings and lend their voices to support harmful traditional practices leading to GBV.
New Change agents and disruptors in Northern Nigeria
We recognise multiple change agents in Northern Nigeria capable of disrupting negative gender norms, the youth, youth associations, the movie industry, musicians, CSOs, etc.
However, MOLs remain the most respected, have the greatest coverage and are most able to influence government decision-making.
This project will be implemented in Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa and Zamfara states.
The project is supported by the Ford Foundation
